The Surreal and Satyrical Art of Winston Smith
Punk rock firebrand, collage maestro & art criminal
Punk Surrealist Winston Smith is a collage artist and illustrator best known for creating the Dead Kennedys iconic logo and album artwork. He has produced over 50 record covers and is known for his work with Green Day and publications such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Spin Magazine and many more. His intricate collage work imbued with provocative, satirical imagery is often made using vintage magazines and other imagery from twentieth-century Americana. His technique of cutting out by hand and weaving each individual element to form fantastical, often irreverent dreamscapes has inspired a generation of artists. He has published multiple books of his collage collections and consistently creates new, powerful, contemporary original compositions.
Winnie World: The Back-Story of Winston Smith:
Winston Smith is an American artist, illustrator, and album cover designer who primarily uses the medium of collage. He is probably best known for the artwork he has produced for the American punk rock band Dead Kennedys.
Winston is classically trained in Renaissance art, having left the United States in 1969 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he lived for several years before moving to Rome. After he returned to the States, he hitch-hiked across America to land in San Francisco in 1976, beginning his burgeoning career as a pioneering punk collage artist that defined the style for flyers and cover art of punk bands worldwide.
Smith is particularly known for his collaborations with Jello Biafra (former Dead Kennedys frontman) and Alternative Tentacles, for whom he has done numerous covers, inserts, adverts, flyers, and logos. He is responsible for the famous Alternative Tentacles Bat logo as well as the well-known Dead Kennedys DK logo and multiple Alternative Tentacles record covers. One of his compositions, "God Told Me to Skin You Alive," was used as the cover of Green Day's 1995 album “Insomniac.”
A version of an illustration which had been on the back cover of the Biafra/D.O.A. album "Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors" was later featured on the cover of the April/May 2000 issue of The New Yorker magazine. His work has also appeared in Spin, Playboy, Wired, Utne Reader, Ad Busters, Mother Jones, Metro Silicon Valley, Ugly Planet, National Lampoon, and numerous punk fanzines, such as MaximumRocknRoll, Seconds, Punk Planet, Flipside and more.
Besides attending the Academy in Florence studying classical Renaissance art Winston later won a scholarship to study cinema at the International University of Art. His work has been included in numerous books chronicling the punk rock era, his compositions highlighted in art textbooks, and his illustrations featured on several book covers, such as Greg Palast's best-sellers "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" and "Armed Madhouse." Winston has designed multiple record covers including covers and insert art for Jello Biafra, Burning Brides, George Carlin and Ben Harper.
